Teeth whitening is a process which can be done in the dental clinic as well as at home. It is important because sometimes our teeth get stained and yellowed – this is something which does not bode well for them. It makes them look very unkempt and untidy. Added to this, this is ground for dirt and plaque accumulation. Teeth whitening at home is done via the use of whitening trays. These are manufactured in the dental laboratory after taking an impression of the teeth and gums. The whitening trays are taken home, smeared with whitening gel and worn for a given number of hours each day and a given number of days. Slowly, but surely, the teeth will start to whiten. However, this whitening is not permanent. This process can be reversed if the patient does not take full care of his or her dental routine. Looking after whitened teeth is very important – it means brushing teeth each time after consuming food or drink. If this is not possible, at least the mouth should be rinsed very well each time after food or drink consumption. Also, the patient must get into the routine of flossing teeth at least once each day. Also, he or she should visit the dentist on a regular basis for further check-ups. Teeth whitening at home can also be done via the use of whitening gums and toothpaste. The gum has to be chewed by the patient for some time for its effect to show up.
How is teeth whitening done in the dental clinic?
Teeth whitening is done in the dental clinic with the help of laser beam. The teeth are first prepped up for this work. They are then smeared with an activating gel. A laser beam is passed over this gel at a given wavelength and for a given duration of time (half an hour to one hour). The gel hardens over the teeth and whitens them by several degrees or grades. This procedure may be repeated once more for more effective results. However, teeth whitened in this manner is not permanent. They can become yellowed or stained again if proper oral care is not taken. Thus, it is best to maintain good dental hygiene rules and regulations after getting the whitening done. For this, one should not eat food items like beetroots – these can cause the teeth to stain again. Also, if one does eat them, it is best to brush the teeth soon afterward or at least rinse the mouth thoroughly well. Also, one should not drink too much of tea, black coffee or red wine and other such drinks. Again, if one does consume them, it is best to clean the mouth soon afterward. One should not also smoke or consume tobacco or nicotine-based products. These cause the teeth to stain. If one does so, it is best to clean up the mouth so that there is no after effect of these.
